change IP’s on an Edge server for OCS

So have you ever had to change IP’s on a server. how about and OCS edge server. that can be interesting and recently we found a way to do it with out much fan fare. it works  great.

Our configuration is with 2 NICs 1 of them in public facing behind a layer 2 firewall. This external NIC has 3 IP’s on it. and we need to change them because we were changing providers.

so here is a  step by step process.

  1. Set DNS Records for External OCS names to have a TTL of 1 hour or less. this need to be put in place 8 days before actually changing IP’s
  2. On the edge server. add the IP’s to the External NIC card while still leaving the old IP’s in place.
  3. Go to the OCS management console stop all services
  4. The open the properties tab for the edge. and go to interfaces. on the interface tab open the access edge and select one of the new IP’s
  5. do this for each one. Then restart the services.
  6. Remove the old IP’s from the NIC
  7. Make the DNS changes in the external dNS server

All should work perfectly, do not forget to make sure the ISA or TMG server IP’s are also moved.
